Serena O’Sullivan is a junior student at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Prior to her Sun Devil status, she joined the Cappies program at Los Alamitos High School. During the program, two of her theater reviews were published in the Orange County Register, and she was nominated for Senior Cappie Critic of the Year.
After high school, Serena O’Sullivan joined Golden West College’s newspaper, the Western Sun, for three semesters. Despite her lack of editing experience, she volunteered to work as an opinion editor and enjoyed it so much she rose through the ranks and worked as an entertainment and executive editor respectively.
She enjoyed working on a paper so much that she decided to attend ASU’s Cronkite school so she could immerse herself in an academic environment wherein growing journalists can thrive.
In Spring 2017, she worked as a PR intern for Undergraduate Student Government and served the State Press as an opinion columnist, photographer and cartoonist. O’Sullivan also lent her voice to the Blaze Radio’s Press Passas a news anchor and weather reporter.
During the Fall 2017 semester, she began working as a writing tutor and returned to the Blaze Radio as a weather reporter for Press Pass as well as an anchor for Traffic Jam. In between speaking and teaching, she worked for the Downtown Devil paper as a photographer as well as local and entertainment reporter.
During the summer of 2017, she worked 40 hours a week as a Media Sales intern for Cox Media, which involved job shadowing people in various departments.
Her third semester in Spring 2018 saw even more personal growth and skill expansion. Not only was she a full-time student and writing tutor, but she also interned with KTAR News. At KTAR, she crafted various packages for on-air news shows. She also interviewed various Arizona professionals. This work has bolstered her knowledge of Arizona with real-world experience of pursuing stories and writing them for the air.
Currently, she has reports for the Phoenix Dog Magazine. For animal rescue organization Boxer Luv, she creates press releases, promotional materials, and news stories for various events. Meanwhile, she continues her work both as an ASU tutor and a reporter/copy editor for Downtown Devil.
In Spring 2018, she was a finalist for nominated for Best Opinion & Commentary by the Society of Professional Journalists for her work on the Curtain Critic column.
